About me

My name is Dr Ayesha Noor Mohamed. I am a fully qualified specialist anaesthesiologist practicing in Johannesburg. My undergraduate training was completed at The University of the Witwatersrand. I then completed 3 years of mandatory service at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital. I began my journey to become an anaesthesiologist in 2017. During my training, I rotated between the 3 major Wits teaching hospitals. I received my full certification in 2022. During this time, I also completed a Masters degree in anaesthesiology. I am passionate about patient care, comfort and safety.

My role in your care

It will be my job to make sure that you don’t feel any pain during the procedure. More importantly, it is also my job to ensure your safety during the procedure. I will be closely monitoring your blood pressure, oxygen saturations, heart rate and temperature. If they are abnormal, I will fix them using a variety of drugs and equipment. I will ensure that your breathing is adequate and if necessary, I will attach you to a ventilator to assist you with breathing. In the case of a surgical complication during the procedure, I will be responsible for resuscitating you while the surgeon continues to fix the problem. It will be my job to administer any necessary fluids or drugs into your drip.

Understanding your risk

Anaesthesia is similar to flying an airplane. The pilot is trained to get the plane off the ground, keep it in the air and land it safely. The pilot will have to navigate bad weather on occasion. The airline is responsible for servicing the plane regularly. If the plane is very old, and not well looked-after, it will be harder for the pilot to safely fly the plane.

If you are young, fit, healthy and have been looking after your body, the risk of complications is low. If you have poorly controlled medical illnesses, this could elevate your risk of anaesthetic complications. It is important to understand your risk before you undergo anaesthesia.
